How EnvScore Works

We aggregate publicly available EPA data into a single platform so you can quickly assess environmental compliance risk.

Data Sources

The Enforcement and Compliance History Online database tracks compliance and enforcement data for over 800,000 regulated facilities under the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA, and other environmental statutes.

Toxic Release Inventory (TRI)

Official site

TRI tracks the management of certain toxic chemicals that may pose a threat to human health and the environment. Facilities report annually on the quantities of chemicals released to the environment.

Risk Score Methodology

Each facility receives a score from 0 (minimal risk) to 100 (critical risk) based on five weighted factors:

30 pts
Compliance Status
Current compliance standing across all EPA programs
25 pts
Noncompliance Duration
Number of quarters in noncompliance over the past 3 years
20 pts
Violation Count
Total number of formal violations on record
15 pts
Enforcement Actions
Formal and informal enforcement actions taken by the EPA
10 pts
Recency
How recently violations and enforcement actions occurred

How to Cite This Data

Recommended Citation Format

EnvScore. "[Facility Name] Environmental Compliance Risk Report." envscore.com/facility/[ID]. Accessed [Date]. Data sourced from U.S. EPA ECHO and Toxic Release Inventory databases.

Data Licensing

All underlying data is sourced from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's publicly available databases (ECHO and TRI), which are in the public domain. EnvScore's risk scores are computed algorithmically from this public data. You are free to reference, quote, and reproduce data from EnvScore with attribution.

Important Note on EnvScore's Role

EnvScore is a data aggregator and risk scoring tool, not a primary source. The risk scores are derived metrics, not official EPA designations. When citing compliance status, violations, or enforcement actions, reference the underlying EPA data source (ECHO or TRI) as the authoritative record. EnvScore provides convenience and interpretation, not original data.
